Workshops

Drawing for Plein Air is an entry point for those new to plein air painting, and for experienced artists looking to refresh their skills. Conducted entirely outdoors, students will draw a variety of scenes and subjects while learning the fundamental principles of drawing the landscape including:
 

  • Composition and Design including the Rule of Thirds and Golden Ratio.

  • Perspective, including establishing the horizon, creating a focal point, understanding figure and ground planes, comparative or proportional perspective, and single and multi-point linear perspective.

  • Students will also learn about negative space, movement, line quality and value.
     

This 5-hour workshop is restricted to just 10 students per day and runs from 10:00am to 3:00pm at Irvine Ranch Historic Park in Irvine. View the complete supply list for this workshop below. Purchases will be refunded if the workshop is cancelled due to poor or hazardous weather conditions.

Location
The Drawing for Plein Air workshop is conducted at Irvine Ranch Historic Park located in Irvine, California at 13042 Old Myford Road, near the intersection of Irvine Boulevard and Jamboree Road.

The 16.5-acre site is home to the Katie Wheeler Libary, OC Parks Headquarters and features a wide variety of architectural and natural elements which are ideal for learning about composition and perspective.

Parking is free at Irvine Ranch Historic Park. There are public bathroom facilities and locations throughout the park to sit and rest.

The Drawing for Plein air Workshop is offered each month on weekend and weekdays. Please click here to select a date and register!
